An unstoppable NBA team is a rare phenomenon that requires a combination of exceptional talent, strategic planning, and unwavering determination. To pull off the impossible, such a team must maintain a high level of performance throughout the entire season, overcoming any obstacles that may arise.

While it is theoretically possible for an NBA team to go undefeated, it is highly unlikely due to the competitive nature of the league and the physical demands of playing at such a high level.

The numbers back that up. An NBA regular season is 82 games. The best record ever is 73-9, set by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who then lost the Finals in seven games. The 1995-96 Chicago Bulls went 72-10, and the longest winning streak in league history is 33 games, by the 1971-72 Lakers. Oklahoma City led the league in 2025-26 and finished 64-18.

Lakers 1971–7269-13

Nine losses is the closest any team has come. An undefeated season needs zero.

How unlikely is 82-0? Treat the best team ever as an 89% winner every night and it would still go undefeated about once in 14,000 seasons. Only at a 98% win rate does an unbeaten season reach about one chance in five, and nobody has come close to winning 98 games in 100. (Illustrative arithmetic: it assumes every game is independent and the win rate never changes.)

However, with the right mindset and approach, an unstoppable NBA team can achieve greatness and leave a lasting legacy in the sport.
